U Today, we are going to solder this DB connector, which is somewhat difficult to acquire recently. We’ll be soldering these lead wires to the terminals. Will we use the iron and laser robots for this?

Yanaka Yes, that’s right.

Iron Soldering

U Let’s start with the iron. Please, go ahead.

We have just finished. Here is the DB connector that was soldered. It looks very neatly done. Mr. Yanaka, could you share some important points or tips about soldering with an iron?

Yanaka Well, the most crucial part would be the iron’s contact position. The solder flow can change depending on where the iron touches.

U The position where the iron touches?

Yanaka Yes, the precision of the iron’s position is very important.

Laser Soldering

U Next is laser soldering. Let’s take a look at the DB connector soldered with a laser.

Now, we are looking at the laser-soldered DB connector. It’s also done very cleanly.

Yanaka Yes.

U For laser soldering, are there any important points or tips you could share?

Yanaka There are mainly two things. First is the position of solder supply, and the second is the placement of the lead wire. The placement position is crucial.

U The position where the lead is placed, right? What’s important about it?

Yanaka First, regarding the solder supply position, if it’s too centered, the solder can ball up.

U It melts and forms a ball first. So, the precision of solder supply position is important.

Yanaka Yes. Also, for the lead wire placement, since laser soldering is non-contact, if the wire is floating while soldering, it will solidify in that state, so that’s very important.

U So the accuracy of the position where the terminal connects is crucial because it affects how the heat is transferred.

Yanaka Yes.
