Introduction

Steve Hello everyone. I’m Steve, a Soldering Engineer at Japan Unix.
This time, I will talk about the basic “configuration” of soldering robots.

The structure of soldering robots is similar to manual soldering.

Let’s take a look at how the functions of manual soldering are incorporated into soldering robots by comparing them.

Soldering Tip

Steve First, the “soldering tip” corresponds to this part on the robot. The color is different, but the basic material is the same.
However, unlike manual soldering, the mounting angle of the soldering tip can be fixed. That’s why stable soldering is possible.

Solder Feeding

Steve Next, the “solder feeding” corresponds to this part on the robot.

In manual soldering, solder is fed by hand, but in a soldering robot, it is done using a solder feeder.

Solder is fed by a gear motor and supplied through a tube to the tip of the needle.

Soldering Cleaner

Steve Next, the “cleaner” corresponds to this part on the robot.

In manual soldering, cleaning must be done manually, but in soldering robots, the air cleaner automatically blows away dirt.

Flux and other contamination attached to the tip are cleaned with a brush cleaner.

Positioning of the Soldering Iron

Steve In manual soldering, positioning is literally done “by hand,” but in soldering robots, it is performed using four axes: X, Y, Z, and rotation.

Settings can be easily performed with a teaching pendant.

Soldering Know-how

Steve Finally, “soldering know-how.”

In manual soldering, solder feeding amount and heating time are controlled by the craftsman’s intuition and technique.

In soldering robots, solder feeding amount, solder feeding speed, and heating time can all be set as conditions.

With this, the craftsman’s know-how can be incorporated into the robot.

Conclusion

Steve The structure of soldering robots is similar to manual soldering, isn’t it?

However, there are various advantages unique to robots, such as repeatability and efficiency.

For those considering soldering automation, if you have any questions or things you’d like to ask, please feel free to contact Japan Unix.

See you next time!
