U Hello everyone, I am Unokuchi, supporting your soldering life.

Today, following our previous session, we have Mr. Yamanashi with us again. Mr. Yamanashi has assisted many customers in delivering and implementing soldering robots. What would you say is the most critical aspect of soldering robots?

Yama Well, I think the main important aspect would be repeatability.

The Three Repeatability

U repeatability, I see. We’ve talked about the importance of repeatability in past JAPANUNIX videos, and here it comes up again.

Yama Yes, that’s right.

U Specifically, what kinds of repeatability are important for robots?

Yama There are mainly three: first is positional repeatability, second is condition repeatability, and third is human motion repeatability.

U Replicating human movements?

Yama Yes, exactly.

U I see, so focusing on the repeatability of position, condition, and human movements.

Repeatability of Position

U So, in terms of repeating position in soldering robots, what are the key aspects?

Yama We have this 3-axis position correction unit, which is for the positioning of the soldering iron.

U To repeat the position where the iron heats and contacts?

Yama Exactly.

U What else is there in terms of position?

Yama The position of solder feeding is crucial. We have this adjustment stage called the Lock-on Mechanism. It allows the repeatation of solder feeding positions in the forward, backward, left, and right directions.

U If repeatation isn’t accurate, what potential effects can occur in soldering?

Yama If the iron tip doesn’t contact the board properly, it could lead to inefficient heat transfer, or solder deviating, or the solder might not wet well.

U So if heating isn’t done properly, solder melting and spreading would be inadequate. Would the same issues occur if the solder feeding position is off?

Yama Yes, similar issues like solder deviating could occur.

repeatation of State

U I see. What about the second aspect, keeping the same condition?

Yama Maintaining the consistent condition of the iron tip is crucial. We use these cleaners, like air cleaners and brush cleaners, to keep the iron tip clean.

Also, this tester is important for keeping the temperature of the iron tip consistent.

U So it’s essential to keep the iron tip clean and its temperature precisely monitored.

Yama Yes. If old solder is present, for instance, the flux can become inactive, leading to poor solder flow or causing solder horns because it doesn’t spread well.

U So, keeping it clean is important.

Replication of Human Movements

U Now for the third aspect, replicating human movements. What functionality does this involve?

Yama Yes, the robot has a descent (and ascent) function. For example, if a pin is bent, a human can easily adjust it during soldering, but the robot uses the descent function to accommodate it. Even if a pin is leaning, it ensures the movement is such that the robot doesn’t ride over it.

U So, if the replication of human movements isn’t accurate, it could affect the way heat is transferred, just like in manual soldering.

Yama Yes, that’s right.

Summary

UPosition, condition, and human movements. Paying attention to these three aspects of repeatability will help in achieving good automated soldering, so please give it a try. Thank you for taking the time today to explain various soldering robots.

Yama Thank you.

U Everyone, we hope to continue providing videos that enhance your soldering life, so see you next time. Goodbye.
